WPI Inflation: Wholesale Inflation Rises to 9.92% in August, Fuel and Food Prices Raise Concerns

New Delhi, Delhi

India’s latest wholesale inflation figures have raised fresh concerns over price pressures in the economy. According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation rate rose to 9.92% in August 2026, compared with 9.78% in July. This represents an increase of 0.14 percentage points in a single month.

The All Commodities WPI Index also increased during August. According to the data, the index rose to 110.8, compared with 110.0 in July. The increase came amid price pressures in food products, petroleum products, and fuel-related sectors.

Fuel and Power Prices Add to Inflation Pressure

Inflation in the Fuel & Power segment also recorded a significant increase in August. According to the available figures, inflation in this category rose from 20.05% in July to 22.93% in August.

Higher fuel prices can affect several other parts of the economy. An increase in transportation costs can raise production and freight expenses, which may eventually put additional pressure on the prices of various goods.

Food Prices Also Under Pressure

During August, changes in the prices of food products and petroleum-related goods played an important role in pushing wholesale inflation higher. Rising food prices can have a direct impact on household budgets and overall consumer spending.

The WPI primarily measures changes in commodity prices at the wholesale level. Its major groups include primary articles, fuel and power, and manufactured products.

The August figures come at a time when controlling inflation remains an important economic priority for both the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the coming months, the movement of food and energy prices will be crucial in determining the direction of wholesale inflation.

A sustained rise in fuel and food prices could increase cost pressures across the economy, while a moderation in these components could provide some relief to businesses and consumers.
