United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting on Friday on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed several important issues, including ongoing conflicts around the world.
The conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine featured prominently during the discussions. Both leaders emphasized the need for greater multilateral cooperation to promote global peace and stability. They also discussed the importance of a multipolar world order.
Prime Minister Modi and Guterres exchanged views on the need to reform multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council. The discussion emphasized the need to make global institutions more effective and better aligned with the realities of the changing international order.
The meeting also covered issues such as freedom of navigation, sustainable development, human-centric artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy and global food security.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi posted on the social media platform X, describing his conversation with Guterres as productive. He said the two leaders discussed the progress made during India’s BRICS presidency, India’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism and reforms at the United Nations.
