The two-day BRICS Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi concluded on Sunday. While several world leaders and representatives participated in the major international event, the absence of chief ministers from several states governed by opposition parties became a talking point. Opposition chief ministers were also not seen at the dinner hosted during the summit.
According to reports, chief ministers from all states had been invited to attend the summit. Despite the invitation, several chief ministers from non-BJP-ruled states did not attend the event. On the other hand, six chief ministers associated with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) participated in the meeting.
There has been no official political statement so far explaining the absence of the opposition chief ministers. However, sources associated with Telangana and Himachal Pradesh said that Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu could not attend the BRICS Summit because of their previously scheduled engagements.
Congress Questions Outcome of the Summit
Following the conclusion of the BRICS Summit, the Congress raised questions over its outcome and the New Delhi Declaration. The party alleged that the declaration lacked sufficient clarity on issues concerning India’s position on matters such as Chinese occupation and terrorist attacks.
The Congress also questioned the central government’s foreign policy in connection with the summit. The party argued that India needs to adopt a clearer and more effective position on sensitive issues concerning its national interests at international forums.
