Amid continuing tensions and military conflicts in the Middle East, the BRICS Summit in New Delhi has produced positive signals regarding relations between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the two countries have agreed to put past differences and bitterness behind them and focus on building a better future.
The development came after a high-level meeting on Saturday in New Delhi between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting. The talks are being viewed as an important step towards improving relations between Iran and the UAE.
Focus on Leaving the Past Behind
According to a statement issued by the Iranian Embassy, President Pezeshkian described the meeting as positive. He said that the two countries had agreed to move beyond past differences and work together towards creating a better future.
Pezeshkian said Iran has no personal hostility towards the UAE or any of its other neighboring countries. Referring to neighboring nations as brothers, he stressed the need for stronger relations, dialogue, and cooperation across the region.
However, the Iranian president also expressed concerns over the presence of US military bases in the Gulf region. He alleged that the United States is using these bases to launch attacks against Iran. The issue is linked to the broader and longstanding tensions between Iran and the United States.
Relations between Iran and the UAE have experienced several ups and downs in recent years. Against this backdrop, the meeting between the two countries’ senior leaders and their reported agreement to expand future cooperation are being viewed as significant from a regional diplomatic perspective.
The discussions at the BRICS platform come at a time when efforts are underway to reduce tensions in the Middle East and promote greater regional stability.
