The 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India concluded on Sunday. Held against the backdrop of rising global tensions and rapidly changing geopolitical dynamics, the summit provided India with an opportunity to demonstrate its diplomatic capabilities and balanced leadership. One of the key achievements of the summit was the consensus reached among all member countries on the New Delhi Declaration 2026.
The world is currently facing economic and strategic uncertainty caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine war, and changing US tariff policies. Against this backdrop, reaching consensus on a joint declaration within an influential multilateral group such as BRICS, despite differences and competing interests among member countries, is being viewed as a significant diplomatic achievement for India.
India’s Key Role in Building Consensus
During the summit held under India’s BRICS presidency, member countries discussed several important issues, including global cooperation, economic development, reform of the international system, and the greater role of developing nations.
India sought to bring countries with differing perspectives together through dialogue and consensus-building. The unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026 is being seen as a result of these diplomatic efforts.

India’s Balanced Approach Was Also Visible at the G20
A similar diplomatic approach was visible during the G20 Summit hosted by India in 2023. At the time, the world was also facing significant geopolitical divisions. Despite these differences, India succeeded in building consensus among G20 members on the New Delhi Declaration.
With the conclusion of the BRICS Summit, the group’s next presidency will pass to China. For India, an important part of its diplomatic legacy will be to ensure that the consensus achieved in New Delhi translates into continued dialogue and stronger cooperation within BRICS.
The successful conclusion of the summit has therefore been presented as an important moment for India’s growing role in multilateral diplomacy, with New Delhi seeking to strengthen its position as a bridge-builder amid an increasingly fragmented global order.
