Thane, Maharashtra: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shut down the canteen at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane after a cockroach was reportedly found in a patient’s meal. Following the patient’s complaint, an inspection of the hospital kitchen reportedly revealed several violations of food safety regulations. As a result, the canteen’s operations were suspended with immediate effect.
Patient Complained on August 28
According to information available, a patient admitted to the government hospital for eye surgery lodged a complaint on August 28, alleging that a cockroach was found in the plate of food served for dinner.
The incident raised concerns over the quality and hygiene of food being provided to patients at the hospital.
Members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also protested over the issue. Party workers demonstrated outside the hospital dean’s office, expressing concern over the quality, cleanliness and hygiene of meals served to patients.
FDA Inspection Finds Multiple Violations
Following the complaint and protest, officials from the Food and Drug Administration inspected the hospital’s kitchen and canteen. During the inspection, authorities reportedly found several violations related to food safety and hygiene standards.
Following the findings, the FDA ordered the suspension of the canteen’s operations.
The FDA has also initiated action against Ram Caterers, the contractor responsible for operating the canteen. Further proceedings are reportedly underway based on the findings of the inspection.
Canteen to Remain Closed Until Investigation Is Completed
Hospital Dean Dr. Swapnali Kadam said on Friday that the canteen would remain closed until the investigation is completed and the necessary approval is obtained from the FDA.
She clarified that the contractor would not be permitted to resume operations without clearance from the FDA.
According to the dean, despite the closure of the canteen, alternative arrangements have been made to ensure that meals continue to be provided to patients admitted to the hospital.
The incident involving a cockroach allegedly found in a patient’s meal has once again raised questions about food hygiene and quality standards in hospitals. The outcome of the FDA’s investigation and the action initiated against the contractor is now awaited.
