Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a temporary ceasefire to Russia. He said Ukraine would not carry out any airstrikes while US President Donald Trump’s envoys are visiting Russia and Ukraine. Zelenskyy also urged Russia to take similar action.
US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, are scheduled to visit Moscow on Saturday and Kyiv on Sunday. The two representatives are expected to discuss a potential peace agreement aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a post on Telegram on Friday, Zelenskyy said that, according to information received from the US president’s team, Witkoff and Kushner would first travel to Moscow before arriving in Kyiv on Sunday. He said Ukrainian diplomats had held a meeting to prepare for the US representatives’ visits.
The meeting also focused on ensuring the envoys’ safe travel. According to Zelenskyy, normal operations in Russian airspace would be maintained during their journey so that the US representatives could complete their trip safely.
The Ukrainian president said Ukraine would refrain from carrying out airstrikes and urged Russia to do the same. He said it was necessary to maintain restraint in military activities for sufficient time to facilitate the envoys’ visits and the arrangements related to the talks.
Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine is looking for genuine options to bring the war to an end. He said the next important step would be to see what proposals the US representatives bring and what response they receive from Moscow.
