Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, key ports in southern Ukraine have once again come under Russian attack. Russia carried out airstrikes on Odesa and the Izmail port located along the Danube River. Following the attacks, fires were reported in both port areas, along with damage to infrastructure. The ports in the Odesa region are crucial to Ukraine’s trade network and agricultural exports. These ports and vessels operating in the area have been damaged in previous Russian attacks as well.
Russian defense officials claimed that the strikes targeted sites linked to Ukraine’s military logistics network. According to Russia, warehouses storing weapons and military equipment supplied to Ukraine by Western countries were targeted. The Russian side also claimed that several vessels were among the targets. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
Izmail port has become strategically important for Ukraine. As the impact of the war on Black Sea shipping routes has intensified, maintaining the movement of goods and exports through the Danube River has remained a key priority for Ukraine. A major attack on the port could therefore disrupt trade activity and cargo transportation.
Russia has also claimed to have captured two additional Ukrainian positions on the ground. According to the Russian side, one of these positions is located in the Zaporizhzhia region and the other in the Donetsk region. These claims have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike on the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Kryvyi Rih has also raised concerns. The city is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. One person was initially reported killed and 13 others injured in the attack. Later, one of the injured victims died, bringing the death toll to two.
The ArcelorMittal facility is one of Ukraine’s most important steel production centers and is part of the business group associated with Indian industrialist Lakshmi Niwas Mittal. Following the missile strike, production and some other operations at the plant had to be temporarily suspended. Efforts were later launched to restore production to normal levels.
The company issued a statement condemning the attack. The strikes on Ukrainian industrial facilities come at a time when the country is already facing major challenges to its energy, transportation and export infrastructure because of the war.
Attacks on ports such as Odesa and Izmail could affect not only Ukraine but also global trade. The Odesa region is a major hub for Ukraine’s grain exports, and maritime activity there is closely connected to international food supplies.
