Police have taken major action in a crude oil theft case involving an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) pipeline in Assam’s Golaghat district. During the investigation, Dipen Patar, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sarupathar co-district, was arrested. Police allege that the officer was providing protection and assistance to individuals allegedly involved in the oil theft network.
According to police, a team led by Golaghat Crime Branch ASP John Das arrested Dipen Patar from his residence on Thursday. The investigation began following an FIR registered at Uriyaghat Police Station on August 3. The complaint alleged that a hole was drilled into an ONGC pipeline between July 25 and 27, resulting in the large-scale theft of crude oil.
During the investigation, police first identified Gopal Barman, a driver from Duliajan, who was allegedly involved in transporting the stolen crude oil. His questioning reportedly provided investigators with leads about other individuals connected to the network.
