Novorossiysk, Russia: A major escalation unfolded on the Black Sea front on Wednesday night as Ukraine launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on the Russian port city of Novorossiysk amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The attack reportedly targeted both military and economic infrastructure. Two major grain terminals at the port were forced to suspend operations, while Russia’s naval facilities in the city also came under attack.
Four Russian Military Vessels Reportedly Affected
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation involved drones, missiles and unmanned attack boats. Ukraine’s General Staff said the operation targeted Russian military infrastructure and Black Sea activities.
According to Ukrainian officials, four Russian military vessels were affected in the attack. Novorossiysk has become increasingly important to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet after several naval assets were moved there following repeated Ukrainian attacks on Russian military facilities in Crimea.
Grain Terminals Suspend Operations
The attack also affected Novorossiysk’s role as a major grain-export hub. Reports indicated that two important grain terminals were damaged and temporarily suspended operations.
Russia is one of the world’s largest wheat exporters, with Black Sea ports playing a major role in shipping agricultural products to Africa, West Asia and other international markets.
A prolonged disruption could put additional pressure on global agricultural supply chains. However, experts caution that it is too early to describe the incident as the beginning of a global food crisis. The extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring port operations remain unclear.
Civilian Areas Also Reportedly Damaged
The attack reportedly caused damage in civilian parts of Novorossiysk, with several residential buildings and commercial properties affected.
Local authorities initially reported varying casualty figures, while later reports indicated that three people had died.
Oil Infrastructure Not Reported Damaged
Novorossiysk is also an important centre for Russia’s oil export infrastructure. The area hosts facilities associated with the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC).
However, available reports have not confirmed damage to the major oil-export infrastructure during the latest attack.
Russia Launches Retaliatory Strikes
Following the attack on Novorossiysk, reports emerged of Russian airstrikes on several Ukrainian regions, including Odesa and Zaporizhzhia.
The latest developments highlight the growing importance of ports, naval facilities and maritime trade routes in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
