Krishna Janmashtami 2026: The festival of Krishna Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, will be observed this year on Friday, September 4, 2026. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Temples across the country will host special prayers, devotional singing and religious programmes. Devotees traditionally observe a fast during the day and break it after performing the midnight worship marking the birth of Lord Krishna.

During Janmashtami worship, Laddu Gopal is specially bathed, dressed and adorned. According to religious traditions, Lord Krishna is bathed with Panchamrit, dressed in new clothes and decorated before various offerings are presented. Keeping all the required puja items ready in advance can therefore make the worship process more convenient.

For Abhishek and Bathing:
For bathing Laddu Gopal, keep an abhishek thali, milk, curd, ghee, honey and pure water ready. These ingredients are traditionally used to prepare Panchamrit. Gangajal, Tulsi leaves, a conch shell and a bell may also be kept as part of the worship arrangements.

For Puja and Aarti:
Arrange incense sticks, dhoop, a ghee lamp, an Akhand Jyoti, camphor, roli, Akshat, yellow sandalwood paste, turmeric and kumkum. Flowers, a sacred thread (mouli), a puja thali and an aarti thali should also be kept ready.

For Laddu Gopal’s Adornment:
On Janmashtami, Laddu Gopal is traditionally dressed in new clothes and adorned with various accessories. These may include a new outfit, handkerchief, crown, earrings, peacock feather, flower garland, flute, Vaijayanti mala, perfume and a decorative seat. Devotees who follow the tradition of placing Lord Krishna in a swing can also arrange a decorated jhula.

For Bhog:
Makhan-Mishri is traditionally considered one of Lord Krishna’s favourite offerings. Other items that can be included in the bhog are coriander panjiri, Panchamrit, makhana kheer, seasonal fruits, dry fruits, sweets and coconut. Depending on family and regional traditions, whole coriander seeds, coconut and other prasad items may also be offered.

Other Puja Items:
Keep a kalash, red or yellow cloth, a paan offering with cloves and other items required according to your puja tradition ready in advance. Devotees may also arrange items for charity according to their faith and means.

Janmashtami Will Be Celebrated on September 4

According to the given Panchang information, the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha will begin at 2:25 a.m. on September 4, 2026, and continue until 12:13 a.m. on September 5, 2026. Therefore, Krishna Janmashtami will be observed on September 4.

The most important aspect of Janmashtami worship is considered to be faith and devotion. If any particular item is missing from the puja arrangements, there is no need to worry unnecessarily. Devotees can worship Lord Krishna according to their family traditions and personal means and offer prasad with devotion.
