Israel Condemns PM Netanyahu Arrest Remarks; New York Mayor Eric Adams Criticizes Statement

New York Mayor Eric Adams says mayoral candidates should focus on city issues after Zohran Mamdani's remarks on Benjamin Netanyahu's possible arrest.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposed arrest has sparked international political debate. New York City Mayor Eric Adams strongly criticized the remarks made by Zohran Mamdani, calling them irresponsible and urging him to focus on local issues instead of international politics.

Mamdani had stated that if elected mayor, he would act on the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Netanyahu, who faces allegations related to war crimes and crimes against humanity. He also suggested that New York City should cooperate with international legal obligations.

However, Mayor Adams dismissed the comments, emphasizing that the authority to enforce international arrest warrants does not rest with the New York City mayor’s office. He added that the priority of the mayor should be addressing the city’s challenges rather than making foreign policy statements.

Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office also criticized Mamdani’s remarks, describing the proposal as legally baseless and politically motivated. Officials argued that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over Israel in the manner suggested by Mamdani.

The controversy intensified after reports that the ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan was under scrutiny over unrelated allegations, leading some observers to question the timing and focus of the debate.

Mayor Adams concluded by saying that Mamdani should concentrate on improving public safety, housing, transportation, and other issues affecting New Yorkers, rather than engaging in international political disputes.
