The Indian cricket team has begun its preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with a crucial three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka XI scheduled from August 7 to August 9 at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) Ground in Colombo. The practice fixture is expected to play a key role in helping the visitors adapt to Sri Lankan conditions before the opening Test in Galle.
Led by Shubman Gill, India arrived in Sri Lanka earlier this week and immediately began training sessions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also shared photographs and videos of the team’s practice on social media, highlighting an intense preparation phase ahead of the World Test Championship assignment.
The warm-up fixture was originally planned as a four-day contest but was later reduced to three days, a decision confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket. Despite the shorter duration, the match is expected to provide India’s batters and bowlers with valuable match practice before the Test series begins on August 15 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lankan pitches, particularly in Galle, are traditionally known for offering significant assistance to spin bowlers as the match progresses. The practice game will therefore be an important opportunity for India’s batting unit to prepare against quality spin and for the team’s own slow bowlers to fine-tune their rhythm under match conditions.
The Sri Lanka XI is expected to feature a balanced combination of experienced and emerging cricketers. Reports indicate that seven players who represented Sri Lanka A against India A during the June–July series are part of the squad, giving the hosts a group familiar with Indian players and subcontinental conditions.
India’s coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, has emphasized the importance of thorough preparation before the opening Test. Gambhir recently said the team must be ready for every challenge from the very first ball and stressed the need for both mental and physical readiness throughout the series.
The warm-up match is also expected to help the Indian team finalize its playing combination. With spin likely to play a decisive role during the Test series, team management will closely monitor the performances of both specialist batters and bowlers before selecting the final XI for the opening match.
India will enter the series under the leadership of Shubman Gill, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. The squad features a mix of experienced performers and young talent as the visitors look to make a strong start in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
The two-Test series will begin in Galle on August 15, with the second and final Test scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23. Both teams will be aiming to secure valuable World Test Championship points in what promises to be a closely contested series.
