One of Amitabh Bachchan’s most iconic songs, which continues to entertain audiences nearly three decades after its release, almost never came into existence. The chartbuster from the 1998 film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was initially turned down by veteran lyricist Anand Bakshi, who reportedly refused to write the song because of its unusual concept. Today, the track enjoys cult status and remains one of the most recognizable songs in Bollywood.
During the production of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, composer duo Dilip Sen and Sameer Sen were entrusted with creating the film’s soundtrack. After finalizing the song’s situation, they approached celebrated lyricist Anand Bakshi to pen the lyrics.
According to accounts shared by the film’s music team over the years, Bakshi was not convinced by the concept and reportedly declined the offer, saying he could not write a song of that nature. His refusal created a challenge for the filmmakers, as the song was considered an important part of the film’s narrative and promotional strategy.
Following Bakshi’s decision, the composers approached another lyricist to take up the assignment. Reports suggest that the second lyricist was also initially hesitant because of the unconventional theme. However, after discussions with the filmmakers and composers, the song was eventually written and recorded.
The result was “Makhna,” the energetic dance number featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda, with vocals by Udit Narayan, Amit Kumar, Alka Yagnik, and others. Upon its release in 1998, the song became an instant sensation and emerged as one of the biggest musical hits of the year.
With its catchy rhythm, vibrant choreography, and the on-screen chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda, “Makhna” quickly became a favourite at weddings, celebrations, and stage performances. Even after 27 years, the song continues to enjoy popularity across television, radio, digital streaming platforms, and social media.
