Pakistan’s troubles deepened on the opening day of the third Test against England in Birmingham. Trailing 2-0 in the series, Pakistan entered the match with seven major changes to its playing XI, but the revamped side could not solve its long-standing batting problems. England then began their innings and, by the close of play, had taken a 23-run lead over Pakistan. As a result, the opening day of the third Test belonged firmly to the hosts.
Seven Changes Fail to Change the Picture
Following their defeat in the second Test at Lord’s, Pakistan made seven changes to the team for the third match. Three players were handed their Test debuts. With such a major overhaul, Pakistan were expected to take the field with renewed energy and attempt to make a comeback in the series.
However, England’s fast bowlers quickly shattered those hopes. Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer kept the pressure on the Pakistani batters, causing their batting order to collapse.
Pakistan Bowled Out for 133
Pakistan’s batters struggled to cope with England’s pace attack. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, and Pakistan were dismissed for just 133 runs before they could build a substantial total.
The performance is particularly concerning because Pakistan’s batting had also struggled in the first two Tests. With changes to the captaincy and team combination, the side had been expected to perform better in the third Test. However, the opening day offered little evidence of a significant improvement.
England Take the Lead on Day One
After restricting Pakistan to a low total, England began their innings. By the end of the day’s play, England had moved past Pakistan’s score and established a 23-run lead.
The lead has put Pakistan under further pressure. Their bowlers will now face the challenge of quickly dismissing the remaining England batters, while the Pakistani batting lineup will have to shoulder a much greater responsibility in the second innings.
Major Challenge Ahead for Pakistan
England already lead the three-match series 2-0. The third Test is therefore Pakistan’s final opportunity to salvage some pride in the series. However, being bowled out for 133 on the opening day has left them in a difficult position.
England will now look to complete a 3-0 series sweep, while Pakistan will need an exceptional performance with both bat and ball to fight their way back into the match.
For now, England have the clear upper hand in the Birmingham Test.
