The 107th birth anniversary of educationist and cooperative movement leader Babu Shivshankar Singh was observed in Ratnapura on Sunday with tributes to his life and contributions. The occasion also saw the felicitation of meritorious students in his memory.
Programmes organised at Maryada Purushottam PG College, Bhudsuri, and Gandhi Higher Secondary School, Chichhor, highlighted Singh’s contribution to expanding education in the rural and relatively backward areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Speakers also remembered his efforts toward strengthening the cooperative movement and the Panchayati Raj system.
A Life Dedicated to Education
According to previously published accounts, Babu Shivshankar Singh played an important role in establishing several educational institutions despite limited resources and difficult circumstances. He is widely remembered as one of the prominent figures associated with the education-awakening movement in Purvanchal.
Addressing the programme at Maryada Purushottam PG College, chief guest Prof. Om Prakash Singh, principal of Digvijay Nath PG College, Gorakhpur, said Singh’s life represented sacrifice, simplicity and hard work.

Madhavendra Bahadur Singh, a young leader and manager associated with several educational institutions, said Singh devoted his life to social service and constructive work. He added that Singh’s contributions to education and the cooperative movement continue to remain relevant.
College principal Dr. Nirmala Singh welcomed the guests. Advocate Sarvesh Singh presided over the tribute meeting, while Dr. Pradeep Rai conducted the proceedings.
Programmes Held at Two Institutions
A separate commemorative programme was organised at Gandhi Higher Secondary School in Chichhor village panchayat of Ratnapura block.
Former principal Rajendra Singh presided over the programme, while principal Rajesh Kumar Yadav conducted the proceedings.
At both institutions, meritorious students were felicitated in recognition of their academic performance and to encourage them to pursue excellence in education. Guests attending the programmes were also honoured with traditional angavastrams (shawls).
Several educationists, teachers and prominent citizens participated in the events. Those present included Dr. Sarvesh Pandey, principal of DCSK PG College; Rana Pratap Singh, manager of Nehru Intermediate College, Ratnapura; Dr. Ashok Singh, principal of Kunwar Singh PG College; manager Om Jay Singh; former district panchayat president Rakesh Singh; Dr. Madan Ram; principal Rakesh Singh; Avnish Kumar Singh, district president of the Secondary Teachers’ Association; Jay Narayan Dwivedi; former block pramukh Dr. Prabhu Nath Rajbhar; Jayant Singh; Mahendra Yadav; former principals Harivansh Singh and Rajendra Singh; and Ajay Kumar Rai.
Legacy Continues Through Educational Institutions
The central message emerging from the anniversary programmes was that the greatest legacy of an educationist lies not merely in remembrance but in the institutions, values and ideas created for future generations.
Speakers said Babu Shivshankar Singh’s efforts to spread education despite limited resources continue to be remembered across Ratnapura and the wider educational landscape of Purvanchal.
They stressed that the “flame of knowledge” lit through educational institutions must continue to burn and that younger generations should carry forward the values of education, social service, sacrifice and hard work associated with Singh’s life and legacy.
The 107th birth anniversary thus became not only an occasion to remember a respected educationist but also a reminder of the continuing importance of education in transforming rural society and creating opportunities for future generations.
