Acclaimed South Indian actor Dhanush has urged students to read, write, and embrace their mother tongue, Tamil, saying that not knowing one’s native language should not be considered a matter of pride. Addressing students and teachers at an event held at Thai Sathya Matriculation School in Chennai, the actor stressed the importance of preserving linguistic and cultural identity while also encouraging young people to learn other languages.
Speaking at the programme, Dhanush said that every individual should first develop a strong foundation in their mother tongue. According to him, learning additional languages is undoubtedly beneficial and can create new opportunities, but it should never come at the cost of neglecting one’s native language.
“If someone cannot read or write their mother tongue and feels proud of it, that is not the right mindset,” Dhanush said while encouraging students to remain connected to their linguistic roots. He emphasized that knowing one’s own language is an essential part of personal identity and cultural heritage.
During his address, the actor also shared an experience from a film shoot in Belgium, where he realized the true value of language and cultural identity while living abroad. He said the experience reinforced his appreciation for Tamil and inspired him to encourage younger generations to preserve and respect their native language.
Reflecting on his own student days, Dhanush recalled that he was not fluent in English during his early years. He admitted that he often made mistakes while speaking the language but never felt insecure because he had confidence in his command of Tamil.
The actor explained that he gradually improved his English over time through learning and practice, but his connection with Tamil remained unchanged. He said mastering additional languages is important in today’s globalized world, but people should never lose touch with the language that represents their heritage and identity.
Dhanush’s remarks come at a time when discussions surrounding language, education, and the role of regional languages continue to be a prominent issue in Tamil Nadu. The state has long emphasized the importance of preserving Tamil, one of the world’s oldest living classical languages, while also encouraging multilingual education.
Many attendees welcomed the actor’s message, viewing it as a positive reminder of the importance of safeguarding local languages and cultural traditions.
