BRICS Summit: Putin’s Major Proposal — New Insurance System and Common Grain Market for BRICS Nations; US and Europe Could Face Concerns

New Delhi, Delhi

During the final session of the 18th BRICS Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward several important proposals aimed at strengthening economic cooperation among member countries. The key proposals included creating a new shared insurance system and a common grain market for BRICS countries.

Putin said BRICS nations have the ability to develop independent channels for the exchange of capital, labour, and technology despite external economic pressures.

Highlights

  • Putin proposed establishing a new insurance system for BRICS countries.
  • Russia also proposed creating a common grain market.
  • Putin emphasized independent economic cooperation among BRICS nations.
  • He also highlighted projects worth around $140 billion associated with the New Development Bank.

Putin Proposes a Shared Insurance System

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the final BRICS session that the group has several plans for future cooperation. These include developing a shared insurance system and a common grain market. He described the insurance initiative as a Russian proposal and invited other BRICS members to participate.

The proposed insurance arrangement could be particularly significant for Russia. Western sanctions have made insurance-related restrictions an important challenge for the international trade of Russian oil and other energy products.

A BRICS-based alternative insurance system could therefore help Russia and other member countries reduce their dependence on Western financial and insurance infrastructure.

Proposal for a Common Grain Market

Putin also proposed establishing a common grain market among BRICS countries. Russia is one of the world’s major grain exporters, making the initiative potentially important for food security and agricultural trade.

Such a system could encourage grain trade, supply coordination, and greater market cooperation among member countries. However, the exact structure of the proposed common market and how it would be implemented have not yet been clarified.

Why Could This Concern the US and Europe?

Putin’s proposals are being viewed as part of a broader effort to develop an alternative economic framework among BRICS countries.

If member nations strengthen independent systems for insurance, agricultural trade, finance, and other economic activities, their dependence on existing Western financial and economic structures could potentially decline to some extent.

However, the actual impact of these proposals will depend on how strongly other BRICS members support them and what institutional mechanisms are eventually created to implement them.

Putin Also Praises the New Development Bank

The Russian President also praised the work of the New Development Bank (NDB), established by BRICS. According to Putin, the bank is associated with projects worth approximately $140 billion.

He described BRICS financial institutions and other initiatives as part of a broader effort to strengthen independent economic cooperation among emerging economies.

Putin’s proposals come at a time when BRICS has expanded and the group is increasingly focusing on cooperation in trade, finance, energy, agriculture, and other sectors.

If initiatives such as a shared insurance system and common grain market move forward, they could give BRICS economic cooperation a new dimension and potentially strengthen the group’s role in the global economic system.
