Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit. His visit to India is being seen as significant for strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries as well as expanding cooperation on the global stage. During his visit, Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BRICS Summit in India is expected to discuss several key issues, including economic cooperation, trade, investment and global challenges. Before departing for India, the Iranian president spoke about the role of BRICS and said that one of the organisation’s key objectives is to counter unilateralism in the international system.
Pezeshkian also stressed the need for greater cooperation among BRICS members to reduce dependence on the US dollar. He said that promoting mutual investment and financial cooperation among member countries could help reduce reliance on the dollar in international transactions.
The Iranian president also highlighted the historic relationship between India and Iran. He emphasised the similarities between the two countries and called for greater cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Trade, energy, transportation and regional connectivity have long been important components of India-Iran relations.
Following its expansion, BRICS now includes several new members alongside Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Iran is also part of the expanded grouping. The summit is expected to focus on the global economy, trade, financial cooperation, development and the interests of the Global South.
