Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood showed a heartfelt moment of sportsmanship by embracing teammate Tommy Carr following a quarterback change, drawing praise from fans during the Big Ten matchup against Indiana.
The Supportive Embrace Between Underwood and Carr
During the game at Michigan Stadium, Bryce Underwood shared a warm embrace with Tommy Carr before kickoff, capturing the attention of Michigan fans. This gesture stood out amid the team’s recent shift in starting quarterbacks.
Fans took to social media, with one noting, “Special moments like this make a first career start even more memorable.” Others called it a “good teammate” moment and “a classy act.”
Why Bryce Underwood Was Benched
Bryce Underwood, who was a No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, faced challenges maintaining consistent performance in his second season at Michigan.
In six games, Underwood completed 72 of 124 passes for 924 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also contributed 223 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. However, turnovers became a concern for the coaching staff under head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
The turning point occurred during the game against Penn State on October 17, when Underwood completed just five of 11 passes for 43 yards and threw two interceptions in the first half. Michigan managed only 80 yards of offense and trailed 3-0 at halftime.
Following these struggles, the coaching staff brought in freshman Tommy Carr after halftime.
Tommy Carr’s Impactful Performance
Tommy Carr revitalized the Michigan offense in the second half, completing five of seven passes for 47 yards and rushing for 36 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run.
Thanks to Carr’s efforts, Michigan rallied to a 21-18 victory over Penn State, providing the Wolverines a crucial win after a tough stretch.
This performance further solidified the decision to change the starting quarterback moving forward.
