Gen-Alpha Protesters Ignite ₹4,400 Crore Property in Italy, Worry Meloni

Italy is currently witnessing intense protests targeting Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. On Saturday, demonstrators, mainly from Generation Alpha, set fire to property worth ₹4,400 crore. These young protesters gathered to voice their dissatisfaction over educational policies, sparking significant unrest in the country.

Mass Arrests Amid Rising Tensions

According to the ANSA news agency, police arrested 200 individuals on Sunday, most of whom are minors around 16 years old. The arrests came as authorities tried to restore order. Prime Minister Meloni urged citizens to remain calm during the turmoil, emphasizing the need for peaceful conduct.

Meloni condemned the violent acts, labeling those responsible as rioters who do not act in Italy’s best interest. The government condemns the destruction and stressed that violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The Roots of Generation Alpha’s Protest

Students in Italy, predominantly from Generation Alpha, argue that the government prioritizes military spending over education. Their slogans include calls such as ‘No Weapons,’ demanding a shift in budget focus. The protests come at a delicate time ahead of Italy’s scheduled general elections in 2027.

In 2024, Italy allocated nearly 4% of its GDP to education, totaling about $97 billion (₹9.21 lakh crore). Conversely, the country spent approximately $30 billion (₹2.8 lakh crore) on procuring weapons, with total defense expenditure reaching $50 billion (₹4.75 lakh crore). This increase in military spending is influenced by pressure from the United States and NATO.

Meloni placed blame for the unrest on left-wing political leaders, claiming they incited the youth. She stated that gangs of troublemakers would not be spared justice. Meanwhile, similar protests have erupted in France, where over 1,500 shops were set ablaze on Sunday, signaling a broader regional unrest.

The situation in Italy reflects growing frustration among the younger generation regarding governmental priorities and societal challenges. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, attempting to prevent further escalation. As the election year approaches, Italy faces heightened political sensitivity connected to these widespread demonstrations.
