“It’s with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now. He fought so hard. Love never ends,” Palin wrote on X.
She posted a smiling photo of Duguay on the ice and confirmed he “passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026 after a hard fought battle with cancer.” Palin added that details for a celebration of life would be announced later.
Rangers mourn loss of franchise icon
Duguay spent eight seasons with the New York Rangers across two periods. His first stint lasted from 1977 to 1983 and included a 1979 Stanley Cup Final appearance, where the Rangers lost to the Montreal Canadiens in five games. He returned for two more seasons from 1986 to 1988.
Over 499 games with New York, Duguay scored 164 goals and added 176 assists, totaling 340 points. The Rangers released a statement honoring his legacy.
“The New York Rangers organization mourns the loss of Ron Duguay, one of the most popular players in franchise history. Ron’s signature skating style—with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice—captivated The Garden Faithful, and his skill, tenacity, and charisma earned him the admiration of all New Yorkers,” the team said.
The statement also sent condolences to his family and friends.
Duguay’s legacy with the Rangers
Duguay shares the Rangers’ franchise record for the fastest goal from the opening faceoff, scoring nine seconds into a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on April 6, 1980.
At Madison Square Garden, his on-ice performances and magnetic personality made him a fan favorite and a well-known figure in New York.
Trade to Detroit sparked career revival
Duguay’s first Rangers tenure ended in 1983 when he was traded to Detroit during a dip in form. He was a key part of the Red Wings’ early 1980s resurgence under GM Jimmy Devellano.
In the 1983-84 season, Duguay ranked fourth on Detroit with 33 goals and 47 assists, finishing third in team points with 80. The next season he improved, with 38 goals, 51 assists, and 89 points, reaching career highs in assists and points.
The Red Wings also issued a statement honoring Duguay after his passing.
At the 1986 trade deadline, Detroit traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Doug Shedden. He also played for the Penguins and the Los Angeles Kings.
Across 864 NHL regular-season games, Duguay recorded 274 goals and 346 assists for 620 points. He added 53 points in 89 Stanley Cup Playoff games, including 31 goals and 22 assists.
