On India’s 80th Independence Day, the ‘Suryapath Tiranga Global Relay’ brought the national flag to different parts of the world in a unique initiative celebrating India’s freedom and national pride. The journey, which began in Fiji, passed through 54 countries and multiple time zones before concluding in San Francisco, USA. The Ministry of External Affairs announced the completion of the campaign on Saturday.

The concept of ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ was inspired by the movement of the sun from east to west. Under the initiative, the Tricolor was hoisted successively at Indian embassies and consulates across different countries. The objective was to keep Independence Day celebrations continuing across different time zones while connecting the Indian diaspora living abroad with the national celebration.
The campaign began in Fiji at around 1:30 a.m. Indian time. The Tricolor then travelled to New Zealand and Australia. Indian missions in several Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar, hoisted the national flag.
The Tricolor was also respectfully hoisted during Independence Day celebrations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The journey then continued to West Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
The campaign also received a strong response across Africa and Europe. Indian missions in Ethiopia, Russia, Kenya, Israel, Egypt and South Africa, as well as Latvia, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Morocco and Iceland, participated in the initiative.
Across the Americas, the Tricolor was hoisted in Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Canada, Jamaica, the United States, Peru and Mexico.
In Beijing, despite the rain, Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami hoisted the national flag at the Indian Embassy in the presence of members of the Indian community. In Tokyo, Indian Ambassador Nagma Malik also hoisted the Tricolor and read excerpts from the President’s address.
The global relay finally concluded with the hoisting of the Tricolor at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco. The initiative, carried out under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, became a global message of India’s shared heritage, national unity and pride.
