According to media reports, the district has 11 sugar mills. These mills procure sugarcane from farmers in Muzaffarnagar and surrounding areas. The district also has a major jaggery market, which further strengthens its sugarcane-based economy. The market is counted among the largest jaggery markets in the world.
94.7 Million Tonnes of Sugarcane Crushed in 2024-25
The scale of Muzaffarnagar’s sugar economy can be understood from the figures for the 2024-25 season. During the season, sugar mills in the district crushed approximately 94.7 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced around 9.6 lakh tonnes of sugar.
According to agricultural data from Uttar Pradesh, sugarcane was cultivated across approximately 1.64 lakh hectares in the district during 2024-25. Sugarcane production during the period stood at around 1.51 crore tonnes.
These figures highlight the importance of sugarcane to Muzaffarnagar’s rural economy. Apart from farmers’ incomes, thousands of livelihoods are connected to sugarcane transportation, employment at sugar mills, agricultural labour, trading and the transportation of processed products.
