South African youngster Lhuan-dre Pretorius created history with a blistering century against Namibia in a T20 International. The 20-year-old smashed 101 runs off just 53 balls, including five fours and eight sixes. His explosive innings helped South Africa defeat Namibia by 11 runs and secure a place in the final of the T20I Tri-Series.
The century was special for Pretorius in several ways. He reached the milestone at the age of 20 years and 161 days, becoming the youngest batter from an ICC Full Member nation to score a T20I century. He surpassed Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai, who had scored a T20I hundred at the age of 20 years and 337 days.
156-Run Opening Partnership With Eerwee
Batting first, South Africa posted a massive 228/4 in 20 overs. Pretorius and Connor Esterhuizen opened the innings and immediately put the Namibian bowlers under pressure, adding 156 runs for the first wicket.
Esterhuizen smashed 88 runs from 40 balls, while Pretorius initially played a more measured innings before accelerating dramatically. He brought up his half-century from 28 balls and then shifted gears, unleashing a series of big shots.
Pretorius was on 89 heading into the final over and needed 11 runs to reach his century. He hit two sixes off the first three deliveries from Gerhard Erasmus to complete his maiden T20I century. However, he was bowled off the next ball, ending his innings on 101.
Namibia Put Up a Strong Fight
Chasing South Africa’s imposing target of 229, Namibia also produced an impressive batting display. The hosts finished on 217/3 in their 20 overs. Jan Frylinck scored a quickfire 72 off 36 balls, while Louren Steenkamp contributed 66 from 44 deliveries.
Namibia kept the contest alive until the final stages, but South Africa eventually secured an 11-run victory.
With the win, South Africa qualified for the Tri-Series final, where they will face Zimbabwe.
Two Young Rajasthan Royals Stars
Following Pretorius’ record-breaking innings, comparisons with India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi have begun. One of the main reasons is that both players are associated with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
Pretorius had already been in excellent form earlier in the series. In the previous match against Zimbabwe, he scored 94 runs from 51 balls, falling just six runs short of a century. Only a few days later, he completed the milestone against Namibia.
Pretorius has also already made his mark in Test cricket. He scored 153 runs on his Test debut, becoming one of South Africa’s youngest players to score a Test century. He has now added another major record to his growing international career with his T20I century.
The explosive performance has not only helped South Africa reach the Tri-Series final but has also increased the spotlight on the young stars associated with Rajasthan Royals in both international and IPL cricket. Attention will now turn to the Tri-Series final and Pretorius’ next performance.
