Focus on Protein but Don’t Ignore Fiber: 5 Foods Rich in Both

Protein is often prioritized in diets, with foods like paneer and eggs considered top choices. However, fiber is equally essential for a balanced diet, though many overlook its intake. Several plant-based foods provide both protein and fiber, each playing distinct roles in maintaining our health. Proteins build muscle strength, whereas fiber supports proper digestion.

On average, an egg contains about 6 grams of protein. Health experts recommend consuming foods that offer a combination of protein and fiber daily. Here are five nutritious foods that not only meet your protein needs but also boost fiber intake.

Rich Protein and Fiber in Lentils

A single bowl of cooked lentils contains approximately 18 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber, surpassing the protein content of eggs. Lentils are a staple in Indian cuisine, easy to prepare and flavorful. They can be enjoyed in soups, salads, or mixed vegetable dishes to enhance their nutritional benefits.

Green Soybean Pods (Lobia)

Known in India as lobia, green soybean pods make a delicious dish when cooked with potatoes. Consuming a bowl of this vegetable with wheat roti provides about 17 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber. These pods can also be added to salads, stir-fries, or grain bowls for versatility in meals.

White chickpeas and black gram are also excellent sources of protein and fiber. One cup of cooked white chickpeas delivers roughly 14 to 15 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber. White chickpea salads offer even greater nutritional benefits. Black gram, when soaked overnight and combined with finely chopped vegetables, makes both a healthy and tasty option.

Quinoa as a Nutritious Choice

Quinoa dishes offer more protein than eggs and notably improve fiber consumption. It can be used as a rice substitute and incorporated into porridges or wholesome salads. A bowl of cooked quinoa provides around 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, making it a smart addition to any diet.

Oats and Seeds for a Balanced Breakfast

While oats don’t have as much protein as lentils or chickpeas, they are a top source of fiber. Combined with protein-rich seeds, oats can create a balanced and nutritious breakfast. Soaking oats overnight and mixing in various seeds increases both fiber and protein intake effectively.
