Narmada Water Dispute: Maharashtra Gets 5 TMC Water from Ukai Dam After CM Fadnavis’ Request

The Maharashtra government has been granted a significant relief in the Narmada water dispute, with directives issued to provide the state 5 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) of water from the Ukai dam. This decision followed a high-level review committee meeting of the Narmada Control Authority, prompted by a strong appeal from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

After the Chief Minister’s earnest request, Water Resources Minister C.R. Patil promptly issued orders to facilitate the release of water from the dam, ensuring a smoother process for the state to receive its due share. The resolution aims to address Maharashtra’s long-standing demand for water under the tribunal’s earlier verdict.

Maharashtra’s Water Allocation under the Tribunal

According to the original decision of the Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal, Maharashtra was allocated a total of 10 TMC of water. This allocation was divided equally: 5 TMC were to be supplied through the Narmada-Tapi diversion canal project, and the remaining 5 TMC were to be supplied directly from the Ukai dam.

Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that the directive on releasing water was already decided during a joint meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He reiterated this fact to emphasize Maharashtra’s entitlement and the legal framework supporting its claim.

Affirmation by Central Authorities

A government release stated that the Chief Minister updated the authorities on Maharashtra’s responsibilities under the Narmada project, presenting the state’s position clearly. Fadnavis reinforced Maharashtra’s rightful claim to its water share from the Ukai dam during the presentation.

“According to the decision taken during the previous meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra is entitled to its allocated water share from the Ukai dam. We have formally requested approval from the central minister and the Chief Minister of Gujarat,” Fadnavis said.

Following the presentation, Minister C.R. Patil confirmed Maharashtra’s rights and authorized the immediate release of the state’s share of water. This swift response from the central government is expected to ease water supply issues for Maharashtra.

The resolution marks a notable step in resolving the ongoing Narmada water allocation challenge, providing Maharashtra with timely access to crucial water resources for irrigation and other needs.
