Mumbai, Maharashtra
Amid rising inflation, consumers are set to face another price shock. The wholesale price of milk in Mumbai and surrounding metropolitan areas has been increased by ₹9 per litre. According to the Bombay Milk Producers Association (BMPA), the new wholesale price will come into effect from September 1, 2026. Following the increase, the wholesale rate will rise from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre.
The revised rates will remain in effect for the next six months. In other words, the increased price will apply from September 1, 2026, through February 28, 2027. Any further changes after that will depend on market conditions at the time.
New Rates to Take Effect from September 1
According to information released by the BMPA, the wholesale price of milk has been increased across the metropolitan supply network in Mumbai and nearby areas. The ₹9-per-litre increase will apply directly to the wholesale market, potentially putting upward pressure on retail prices as well.
However, an increase in wholesale prices does not necessarily mean that retail prices for consumers will rise by exactly ₹9 per litre everywhere. Local supply conditions, distribution costs and retailer margins can all influence the final price paid by consumers.
Higher Animal Feed and Transportation Costs Behind the Increase
The increase in milk prices has been attributed primarily to rising animal feed and transportation costs. In the dairy sector, higher expenses for cattle feed, livestock maintenance and transporting milk from production centres to markets put additional pressure on overall production and supply costs.
Milk is a staple item in everyday household consumption. Therefore, an increase in its price can have an impact beyond the household budget. It may also contribute to higher prices for tea, sweets, curd, paneer and other dairy-based products.
With the wholesale milk price in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region reaching ₹102 per litre, consumers will now be watching closely to see how much of the increased cost dairy companies and retailers ultimately pass on to customers.
