India marked its most successful campaign ever at the Asian Para Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, concluding on October 23. Indian para-athletes shattered previous records, securing a total of 114 medals including 30 golds across multiple sports. This achievement highlights the country’s growing prowess in para-sports at the continental level.
Record-Breaking Medal Haul in Final Events
The final day saw India add several medals to its tally, notably in men’s javelin throw. Sumit Antil claimed his second consecutive gold in this event, while India also won silver and bronze medals here. In men’s club throw, Pranav Surma clinched India’s last gold of the tournament, with Dharmbir Nain winning bronze in the same event. These remarkable results helped India finish fourth overall in the medal table, marking a historic high.
Alongside the 30 gold medals, India earned 35 silver and 49 bronze medals. This surpasses their previous best performance at the last Asian Para Games where India won 108 medals: 27 gold, 32 silver, and 49 bronze. Although three medals were later revoked due to doping allegations against Neeraj Yadav and Parveen, the tally then remained at 108. This time, the team’s performance was undeniably better.
Smaller Team, Greater Impact
One notable aspect of India’s success is the smaller team size. Compared to 309 athletes sent to the last Games in Hangzhou, India sent only 168 para-athletes to Aichi-Nagoya but produced more medals. Para-athletics contributed the most with 65 medals, including 22 golds, 19 silvers, and 24 bronzes, cementing its role as the backbone of India’s success.
Indian athletes also showed significant improvement in para swimming and para table tennis. Previously, India had secured just one medal in para swimming, but this time the team won 3 silver and 8 bronze medals. Para table tennis players increased their bronze medal count from 2 to 7. Para archery and para shooting performances were consistent with the last Games, winning 6 and 5 medals respectively.
The stellar showing at the Asian Para Games reflects the dedication and skill of Indian para-athletes, backed by focused preparation and support. This record-breaking medal count not only boosts India’s standing on the Asian para-sports stage but also inspires future athletes. The team’s success underscores the progress of para sports within the country.
With this historic final day and overall performance, India has set a new benchmark for excellence in the Asian Para Games. The achievements in Nagoya will serve as motivation for the next generation of para-athletes aiming for bigger victories in upcoming international competitions.
India’s fourth-place finish in the medal standings confirms its rise as a dominant force in para sports. The athletes’ ability to outperform their previous records while competing with fewer participants indicates a focused and efficient team effort. This accomplishment has also drawn attention to the importance of continued investment and development in para sports nationally.
The Asian Para Games in Nagoya closed on a high note for India, with athletes displaying determination and exceptional talent. Their outstanding results have carved a new chapter in the country’s sports history, demonstrating that Indian para-athletes are ready to claim their place among Asia’s best.
