Washington, D.C., USA
US President Donald Trump’s changing approach toward China has sparked political debate as well as widespread satire in the United States. During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington, Trump hosted him with considerable warmth and ceremony, prompting sharp commentary from American media outlets and late-night comedy shows.
Trump’s welcoming approach appeared markedly different from his earlier anti-China statements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump repeatedly criticised China and used terms such as “Kung Flu.” His notably friendly interaction with Xi in the latest meeting highlighted the contrast between his earlier rhetoric and his current diplomatic approach, prompting a wave of reactions on social media.
Trump Gives Xi a Tour of the White House
During Xi’s visit, Trump showed him several parts of the White House. American commentators highlighted references to the Oval Office, other areas of the presidential residence and even the helipad.
Some commentators humorously compared the scene to a child inviting a friend home and proudly showing them their room, toys and favourite belongings.
Trump’s decision to personally welcome Xi at the airport also became a subject of online jokes, with some people humorously referring to him as “Uber Trump.”
Xi Maintains Diplomatic Distance
While Trump appeared particularly warm and welcoming, Xi Jinping maintained a comparatively restrained approach. Rather than staying at Blair House, which is traditionally used for visiting heads of state, Xi reportedly chose the Waldorf Astoria.
Interestingly, the hotel had previously been among properties associated with Trump’s business interests.
Late-Night Shows Join the Mockery
American late-night comedy shows also seized on the Trump-Xi meeting. Comedians joked about Trump travelling to the airport to welcome Xi and his reaction to the sound of US military aircraft there.
Television hosts including Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon also poked fun at the shift in Trump’s China policy. His lavish hospitality toward Xi was contrasted with some of his earlier harsh rhetoric against China.
Major Issues Take a Back Seat
Behind the spectacle, however, the meeting involved serious issues including trade, tariffs, technology and the global economy. The United States and China have long been involved in significant economic and strategic disputes.
Critics argue that Trump’s changed tone has created a striking contrast between his earlier statements and his current diplomatic conduct. As a result, much of the public discussion surrounding Xi’s visit focused less on the formal negotiations and more on the leaders’ public personas and Trump’s highly enthusiastic hospitality.
The Trump-Xi meeting once again demonstrated how the public language and behaviour of world leaders can become subjects of domestic political debate, media scrutiny and popular satire.
