New Delhi, Delhi. The weather in the national capital took a sudden turn on Monday, surprising residents as heavy rain swept across several parts of Delhi. The day had begun with relatively normal weather, while the weather department had predicted the possibility of light rainfall at isolated places. However, by afternoon, conditions changed dramatically, with heavy showers lashing several areas of the city. An Orange Alert was later issued in view of the situation.
During the morning, Delhi witnessed partly cloudy skies, and sunshine was visible until around 11 a.m. The weather appeared normal at that time. However, within minutes, dark clouds covered the sky and heavy rainfall began. The sudden downpour caught many people by surprise, especially those who had left their homes without preparation and were forced to deal with the rain while travelling.
The rainfall continued intermittently until late evening, with the heaviest showers recorded between 12 noon and 1 p.m. According to data recorded between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Janakpuri received the highest rainfall at 72.5 mm, followed by Ayanagar with 70 mm. Palam recorded 58.2 mm of rainfall, making it the third-highest rainfall location during the period.
The heavy rain disrupted normal life in several parts of the capital. Commuters faced difficulties on the roads, while waterlogging was reported in multiple areas. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians were particularly affected by the sudden downpour.
The rainfall also influenced temperatures. On Monday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees Celsius, which was 1.8 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.8 degrees Celsius, around 1.4 degrees above normal. Humidity levels ranged between 78% and 100%, leaving several areas experiencing humid conditions despite the rain.
According to the weather department, Delhi may continue to receive light rainfall on Tuesday. Rainfall activity could decrease from Wednesday, while temperatures are expected to rise. However, considering the uncertainty in weather conditions, residents have been advised to remain cautious.
The rapidly changing weather in Delhi has also renewed discussions about the possible impact of climate change and broader global weather patterns. Weather experts believe that rapidly changing climatic conditions are making sudden heavy rainfall events increasingly challenging to predict. For now, the weather in the capital is expected to remain unpredictable over the next few days.
