Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a comprehensive review of the performance and progress of the country’s 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). He directed all defence companies to prepare a clear and practical five-year roadmap aimed at strengthening India’s defence preparedness amid evolving security challenges.
The review meeting was held at the Defence PSU Bhawan, where key issues including indigenous defence production, technological innovation, research and development, and defence exports were discussed in detail.
During the meeting, the Defence Minister assessed the annual performance of the DPSUs and reviewed their achievements so far. He also appreciated their contribution to India’s record defence production.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Rajnath Singh said that DPSUs are playing an important role in strengthening the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. He called upon public-sector defence companies to continuously enhance their capabilities to advance the goal of a self-reliant defence sector.
Focus on Indigenous Technology and Future Requirements
The Defence Minister placed particular emphasis on developing indigenous technologies and solutions keeping in mind the future requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
He stressed that DPSUs must focus not only on increasing production capacity but also on improving technological capabilities, research and development, and innovation.
The development of advanced domestic technologies is expected to reduce dependence on foreign defence systems while enabling Indian defence companies to provide solutions tailored to the operational requirements of the armed forces.
Push for Self-Reliance and Defence Exports
The meeting also focused on strengthening self-reliance in the defence sector and increasing the ability of DPSUs to meet the country’s defence requirements through domestic production.
Alongside domestic requirements, the Defence Minister emphasised the need to explore new opportunities for increasing defence exports. Expanding India’s presence in international defence markets is expected to create additional opportunities for Indian defence manufacturers while strengthening the country’s position as a defence manufacturing hub.
Five-Year Roadmap to Set Clear Direction
The proposed five-year roadmap is expected to provide DPSUs with a clear direction in areas such as production, technology development, research and development, innovation and exports.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring that India’s defence public-sector companies are better prepared to meet future security requirements while contributing more significantly to the country’s long-term objective of building a strong, technologically advanced and self-reliant defence industry.
