New Delhi, India
If you have important banking work to complete in September 2026, make sure to check the bank holiday calendar before visiting a branch. Whether you need to clear a cheque, deposit cash, prepare a bank draft, complete KYC formalities, or handle any other branch-related work, visiting on a holiday could mean an unnecessary trip.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar, bank holidays in September vary from state to state and depend on local festivals and occasions. Therefore, banks across the country do not necessarily remain closed on the same dates. Regular weekly holidays, including Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, are also included.
Highlights
- Banks will remain closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays in September 2026.
- Some states will have additional bank holidays because of local festivals.
- The number of bank holidays is not the same across all states.
- Digital services such as UPI, internet banking, and mobile banking generally remain available.
Weekly Bank Holidays in September 2026
The regular weekly bank holidays falling in September 2026 are:
- September 6, Sunday — Weekly holiday
- September 12, Saturday — Second Saturday
- September 13, Sunday — Weekly holiday
- September 20, Sunday — Weekly holiday
- September 26, Saturday — Fourth Saturday
- September 27, Sunday — Weekly holiday
On these days, bank branches across the country will remain closed for regular branch-based banking services.
Several States Will Also Have Festival Holidays
Apart from weekly holidays, bank branches in different states may remain closed on certain dates because of local and religious festivals. Bank holidays are determined on a state-wise basis under the RBI’s holiday framework. Therefore, a bank closure in one state does not necessarily mean that branches across the country will be closed on the same day.
For this reason, customers whose banking work is linked to a particular city or state should check the local bank holiday calendar before planning a branch visit.
Will Banks Be Closed for 14 Days Everywhere?
This is an important point to understand. The figure of 14 bank holidays in September does not apply to every bank branch across the country. Bank holidays are determined on a state-wise basis, and festival holidays generally apply only in the relevant states.
Therefore, if a calendar lists 14 bank holidays for September, it does not mean that banks in your city will remain closed for all 14 days. The actual number of holidays may be lower depending on the state.
Digital Banking Services Will Continue
Even when bank branches are closed, most digital banking services generally remain available. Customers can continue to use UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, and ATMs for eligible transactions.
However, certain services that require a physical visit to a branch may not be available on bank holidays. Customers should therefore plan activities such as cheque deposits, cash deposits, bank drafts, document verification, and other branch-related work in advance.
Note: Since bank holidays vary from state to state, customers should verify the exact holidays applicable to their city through the RBI’s official bank holiday calendar or by checking with their respective bank branch before planning a visit.
