Air India Plans to Shift More Europe and US-Bound Flights to Mumbai Amid Pakistani Airspace Restrictions

New Delhi, Delhi: Air India is considering changes to its international flight operations following the continued closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian airlines. The airline is exploring the possibility of operating more flights to Europe and the United States from Mumbai instead of Delhi. Air India’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tevoldé Gebremariam, shared this information on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 event, he explained that the closure of Pakistani airspace has affected flights operating from Delhi more significantly than those departing from Mumbai. As a result, the airline is reviewing its international network and operational strategy.

However, he clarified that Air India has no plans to discontinue flights from Delhi to Europe and the United States. Services on these routes will continue.

Bengaluru May Become Air India’s Third Operational Hub

The airline is also exploring the possibility of establishing Bengaluru as its third operational hub to strengthen regional connectivity.

This move could improve international flight connections for passengers travelling from southern India and provide additional operational flexibility.

Rising Fuel Costs and Geopolitical Challenges

Gebremariam highlighted that rising fuel prices and geopolitical developments are among the major challenges facing the aviation industry.

He noted that the closure of Pakistani airspace has created particular difficulties for Indian airlines, while their international competitors do not face the same restrictions.

Air India Plans to Expand Its International Fleet

Air India is also working to increase its international market share and reduce operational costs. As part of its expansion strategy, the airline plans to acquire additional wide-body aircraft to strengthen its long-haul international connectivity.

Currently, Air India operates a fleet of 171 aircraft, including 61 wide-body aircraft.

The airline has placed orders for a total of 600 aircraft, with approximately 540 aircraft scheduled for delivery over the coming years. The pending order includes around 70 wide-body aircraft.

The proposed operational changes and fleet expansion are expected to help Air India strengthen its international network, improve connectivity and compete more effectively in the global aviation market.
