Aamir Khan Says He Was Unaware of Sonam Wangchuk During 3 Idiots, Expresses Concern Over Activist’s Detention

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has addressed a long-standing misconception surrounding his blockbuster film 3 Idiots and Ladakh-based education reformist Sonam Wangchuk. For years, many people have believed that Aamir’s popular character Rancho was directly inspired by Wangchuk. However, the actor has clarified that he was not aware of Sonam Wangchuk when the film was being made.
Speaking during an interaction, Aamir said he later came to know about Wangchuk and his work. He also expressed concern over reports related to the activist’s detention and said he hoped the matter would be resolved appropriately.
‘I Didn’t Know About Sonam Wangchuk at the Time’
Aamir Khan reportedly said that the popular assumption linking Rancho directly to Sonam Wangchuk was not accurate.
He explained that when 3 Idiots was being made, he did not know about Wangchuk. According to Aamir, the film and its characters were based on a story adapted from author Chetan Bhagat’s work, while director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi developed the screenplay.
Aamir said he learned about Sonam Wangchuk later and subsequently became familiar with his work and contribution to education and innovation.

During the interaction, Aamir was also asked about reports concerning Sonam Wangchuk’s detention. Responding to the question, the actor reportedly said that Wangchuk was a respected person and expressed hope that the situation would be resolved soon.
