The INDIA bloc’s planned public impeachment programme against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was postponed to Saturday due to rain, announced Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday in New Delhi.
Postponement of Impeachment Programme
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, told reporters that the decision to delay the event was made by consensus to avoid discomfort for senior leaders who would have to sit in the rain. He confirmed the programme would be held the next day at the same time.
Details of the Upcoming Rally
The rally scheduled for the day after at Ramlila Maidan aims to unite people from various sectors, including political and social workers, civil society members, journalists, and others. Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of responsible roles in what he described as the “demolition of Indian democracy.”
Allegations of Obstruction
Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the Home Minister was trying to prevent people from travelling to Delhi to attend the rally by stopping party members and supporters from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Telangana, and Punjab.
Response and Unity Among Opposition
The INDIA bloc views the November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan as a demonstration of public sentiment. Rahul Gandhi accused BJP leadership and industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani of benefiting from alleged electoral irregularities. He emphasized that the protest is a united front of the entire Opposition seeking to defend the Constitution, the idea of India, and citizens’ right to vote.
Preparations and Meeting Before Event
The public impeachment programme was initially scheduled for 3:30 pm on Friday at 10, Rajaji Marg, the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Pawan Khera, KC Venugopal, and Jairam Ramesh, gathered at Kharge’s residence ahead of the event for a meeting.
