Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has unveiled an ambitious plan to quadruple India’s port capacity by the year 2047. Speaking during his visit to the Port of Rotterdam, Goyal highlighted the critical role of upgrading maritime infrastructure and enhancing international trade connections to support the country’s rapidly growing economy.
During his visit to the Netherlands, Goyal emphasized that despite doubling port capacity in the last decade, India still needs significant increases to keep pace with projected GDP growth and rising trade volumes. He expects India’s port infrastructure to double again over the next two decades to meet future demands.
Enhancing Maritime Cooperation with Europe
Goyal shed light on the growing potential for maritime collaboration between India and Europe. He pointed out that India could benefit from the expertise of the Port of Rotterdam, which is known for world-class infrastructure and operational efficiency. He stressed the importance of learning from Rotterdam’s experiences to modernize existing Indian ports and develop advanced facilities.
“As we upgrade ports and build state-of-the-art assets, collaborating with Rotterdam will strengthen ties between India and Europe,” Goyal said. The partnership aims to boost India’s maritime capabilities and help integrate the country more deeply into global supply chains.
Focus on Sustainable Maritime Development
The minister also highlighted India’s commitment to sustainable maritime growth, especially emphasizing initiatives around carbon capture and green energy. These areas not only address environmental challenges but also open new avenues for international trade in clean energy sectors.
Goyal noted, “Our focus on carbon capture and green energy benefits the environment and creates fresh trade opportunities in green energy.” He described India as one of the fastest-growing major economies, having developed high standards of quality, efficiency, and productivity, positioning it as a key player in global trade and logistics.
Expressing confidence in India’s maritime ambitions under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he encouraged continuous efforts to achieve bigger milestones. “We should never be satisfied and must always strive for more. ‘Ye Dil Maange Mor’ is our motto,” he said.
Government Initiatives Supporting Port Growth
Goyal also drew attention to the government’s Sagarmala initiative, aimed at strengthening India’s maritime ecosystem by improving port infrastructure and connectivity. Under this program, the nation is expanding and upgrading its port capabilities to enhance efficiency and throughput.
Additionally, the minister revealed plans to establish a major maritime education and training institute in his Mumbai constituency. This Maritime Institute of Excellence will focus on producing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the growing demands of the global shipping industry. “We aim to provide world-class training to seafarers,” Goyal said.
Overall, Goyal’s visit to Rotterdam underscores India’s strategy to firmly establish itself in global maritime trade. By expanding infrastructure, adopting sustainable technologies, and cooperating with established European ports, India aims to become a significant force in international shipping and logistics.
