External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called on the global community to adopt a balanced and responsible approach toward artificial intelligence (AI). He said AI offers significant opportunities for the world, but its potential consequences and the rapidly emerging threats in the digital domain cannot be ignored.

Jaishankar co-chaired a session with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on the theme of “AI in the Context of International Peace and Security, with a Particular Focus on Maritime Security.” During the session, he highlighted the need to pay close attention to security considerations alongside the rapid development of AI.

The External Affairs Minister said it is essential to promote innovation in the field of AI while also ensuring that security risks arising from emerging technologies are addressed effectively.

He also referred to the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the recently concluded 18th BRICS Summit. According to Jaishankar, the declaration emphasised democratic access to AI resources, the development of safe and trustworthy AI systems, and greater investment in human capabilities.

The New Delhi Declaration also highlighted the importance of promoting the use of AI for economic development and social welfare. India’s focus is on ensuring that the benefits of AI reach society at a broader level and that technological advancement is used in the interest of humanity.

Jaishankar further stressed the importance of international cooperation in view of the rapidly evolving threats in the digital world. He said AI should not be viewed merely as a tool for technological advancement but also in the broader context of global peace and security.
