Amid escalating military tensions between Iran and the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump has shared two AI-generated videos on the social media platform Truth Social depicting scenes of U.S. military strikes. One of the videos allegedly shows an American bombing attack on Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub. However, importantly, there has been no independent confirmation so far that the United States has actually attacked Kharg Island.
The AI-generated footage shows a large explosion involving an oil storage tank and an oil tanker. A fighter jet can also be seen in the sky. In his post, Trump claimed that Kharg Island had suffered extensive damage. Since the beginning of the war, the U.S. president has repeatedly warned that the island could be seized or destroyed.
Trump’s post came just hours after the U.S. military carried out an operation on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. officials, the operation targeted rocket launchers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as well as mine-laying activities.
The United States said the operation was intended to prevent Iran from laying additional naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. U.S. Central Command described the operation as limited and precise.
Iran Also Claims Retaliatory Strikes
Following the U.S. operation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed that it had targeted two U.S. military air bases in Jordan with ballistic missiles. Jordan’s military said it had intercepted and destroyed eight missiles. Iran later also claimed to have targeted U.S. military personnel stationed at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
Why Is Kharg Island Important to Iran?
Kharg Island is considered the backbone of Iran’s oil export infrastructure. Before the war, around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports were reportedly handled through the island. Its strategic location and deep-water facilities allow large oil tankers to access the terminal.
Iran is a major oil-producing member of OPEC. Therefore, an actual military strike on Kharg Island could have a serious impact on the country’s oil exports and economy. However, for now, the AI-generated video shared by Trump does not independently confirm that a real attack on Kharg Island has taken place.
