US President Donald Trump has once again made a major claim regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Trump shared a map of the Strait of Hormuz on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing it as a new territory of the United States. His claim has once again intensified international discussions over this strategically important maritime route.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important sea routes. A significant amount of crude oil, natural gas, and other goods passes through this route. Therefore, rising tensions between the United States and Iran over this maritime region could also affect global trade and energy markets.
In the map shared by Trump, the important maritime chokepoint was shown as being surrounded. According to reports, the US President had previously shared the same image on August 18. Earlier, during a rally held in New York on August 15, he reportedly spoke about declaring the Strait of Hormuz as US territory.
During the rally, Trump reportedly said that after defeating Iran, he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as American territory. His statement triggered significant reactions in political and diplomatic circles.
Iran Rejects the US Claim
Meanwhile, Iran has reiterated its claim of control over the Strait of Hormuz. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said that the maritime route would remain closed until the United States changes its behavior and fulfills its responsibilities.
In a statement broadcast on state television, Rezaei said that despite US claims, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and that reopening it would only be considered after a change in America’s behavior. He also urged other countries not to participate in what he described as an economic war initiated by the United States.
The ongoing exchange of statements between Trump and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz has further increased regional tensions. However, questions remain regarding the legal and international recognition of Trump’s claim.
