Sugar Retail Prices Fall by Up to 15 Percent, 1,000-Quintal Stock Limit Imposed on Dealers

New Delhi, Delhi

To ensure adequate availability of sugar during the festive season and keep retail prices under control, the Central Government has further tightened the stock limit for sugar dealers. Under the new order, from October 15 to November 30, sugar dealers across the country will be allowed to maintain a maximum stock of 1,000 quintals of sugar. In addition, the period for which this stock can be held has been limited to 15 days.

The government’s decision aims to increase the availability of sugar in the market and prevent hoarding. Considering the possibility of increased demand for sugar during the festive season, the government has taken this step. The impact is also being seen in the retail market, where sugar prices have declined by up to 15 percent.

Earlier, the government had set the stock limit for dealers at 2,000 quintals from September 15. This limit has now been reduced to 1,000 quintals. The government has also specified the maximum period for which dealers can hold their sugar stock.

Special Exemption for Kolkata and Assam

Taking into account the requirements of certain regions, the government has prescribed separate stock limits for Kolkata and its extended metropolitan area, as well as Assam. Dealers in these regions will be permitted to maintain a stock of up to 2,000 quintals of sugar.

According to the Ministry of Food, Kolkata procures sugar from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka and supplies it to eastern India and the northeastern states. In Assam, a higher stock limit has been prescribed considering the geographical conditions and transportation-related challenges in the region.

The government’s objective is to ensure adequate availability of sugar in the market during the festive period and make sugar available to consumers at reasonable prices.
