State Governments to Directly Appoint Retired Agniveers; Uttarakhand Announces

The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath service scheme is set to retire soon. About 75% of these candidates will complete their four-year tenure and be released, while only 25% will be retained permanently. To support employment opportunities for retired Agniveers, various state governments are implementing reservation policies and offering concessions in recruitment processes. Recently, the Uttarakhand government revealed plans to provide direct appointments to retired Agniveers.

Uttarakhand’s Direct Appointment Plan

In a recent development, the Uttarakhand government announced it will directly accommodate two retired Agniveers in the 40th battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC). This decision was approved by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami as part of an effort to integrate retired personnel into state forces by filling existing vacancies. The move marks a significant step in facilitating employment for retiring Agniveers.

The Uttarakhand government stated that the initiative followed a correspondence from a Joint Secretary of the central government who requested arrangements for retired Agniveers’ placements. Responding positively to the appeal, the state decided to approve the appointments against vacant posts in the PAC’s 40th battalion.

Retirement and Retention Challenges Ahead

The first batch of Agniveers from the Indian Navy is scheduled to retire on November 21, 2026. With 75% expected to complete service and be released, only a quarter will move into permanent roles. The three armed forces are reportedly considering increasing the retention rate for Agniveers, and proposals related to this are expected to be submitted to the government after the first batch retires.

Meanwhile, the recruitment policies of various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)—including the BSF, CRPF, CISF, and ITBP—as well as the Assam Rifles, have been updated to offer 50% reservation for ex-Agniveers in constable (General Duty) and rifleman vacancies. A new category titled ‘ex-Agniveer’ has been created to streamline this process.

Exemptions in Recruitment Tests

Retired Agniveers applying for CAPF and Assam Rifles will be exempted from Physical Standards Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), and written exams for constable and rifleman posts. This concession is aimed at facilitating easier re-entry into government service for those who have completed their Agnipath tenure.

State-Level Reservations and Age Relaxations

Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, have introduced reservations for retired Agniveers ranging from 10% to 20% in various government jobs. Additionally, age relaxation of 3 to 5 years will be provided, giving ex-Agniveers extended eligibility to apply beyond normal limits. The first batch will receive a 5-year age relaxation specifically.

These efforts reflect a growing recognition of the need to support Agniveers after their abbreviated service period under the Agnipath scheme. By offering direct appointments, reservations, and test exemptions, state and central agencies aim to improve career prospects for retired personnel, ensuring a smoother transition to civilian employment.

As Agniveers prepare to leave military service in the coming years, the coordinated approach by states and central agencies will be crucial in providing them with stable employment opportunities. The Uttarakhand government’s recent announcement is an early example of this ongoing drive to accommodate retired Agniveers in government roles.
