Sharad Purnima Kheer: When to Lift and How to Eat Moonlit Kheer

Sharad Purnima, observed on Sunday, October 25, 2026, holds a special place in Hindu tradition. It is believed that on this full moon night, the moon shines with its sixteen divine qualities, and its light is considered as nectar. People also worship Goddess Lakshmi, who is believed to visit the earth to bless her devotees with prosperity and happiness.

One popular tradition during Sharad Purnima is preparing kheer, a sweet rice pudding, and placing it under the open sky to absorb the moonlight. Devotees believe that this moonlit kheer becomes sanctified and consuming it the next day as prasad brings good fortune.

When to Place Kheer Under the Moonlight

According to customs, kheer should be put outside after 8 PM on Sharad Purnima night so that the moonlight can bathe it. While the moon rises between approximately 5:00 to 5:40 PM, placing the kheer later in the night ensures the best absorption of the moon’s beneficial rays. Ideal timings vary, but many suggest between 8:30 PM to 11:30 PM or 10 PM to midnight as suitable periods for placing the kheer outdoors.

Since the moonlight is believed to activate the kheer’s sacred properties, timing is viewed as important. Weather and local moonrise times can affect the exact moment when kheer should be set outside, so devotees often adjust accordingly.

When and How to Consume Sharad Purnima Kheer

The next morning, before sunrise (Brahma Muhurta), usually between 4 and 5 AM, devotees remove the kheer from under the open sky. It can also be taken after completing the morning bath and prayer rituals. The kheer is traditionally first offered to Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi as bhog, signifying devotion and gratitude.

After the divine offering, the kheer is shared among family members as prasad. Devotees are advised not to leave the kheer uncovered for too long, especially if the weather is humid or warm, to avoid contamination and preserve its purity.

To protect kheer from dust, insects, or other impurities during the night, it is recommended to cover the container with a clean muslin cloth or a perforated lid. This allows the moonlight to reach the kheer while ensuring its safety.

The tradition of moonlit kheer on Sharad Purnima symbolizes spiritual purity and blessing. By following these rituals carefully, followers hope to receive the divine favor associated with this auspicious night.
