Sadhguru, founder of the Isha Foundation, has expressed deep concern over a foiled mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Palatine, Illinois. He highlighted the disturbing fact that a young person’s mind can become so consumed by hatred that they plan to kill people they consider different. This incident, he says, reflects a failure in how we nurture the upcoming generation.
Sadhguru’s remarks on the threatening incident
In a post on the social media platform X, Sadhguru emphasized the importance of fostering inclusivity and raising human consciousness to prevent such hatred. He expressed gratitude towards those who acted swiftly to stop the planned attack in Aurora, near the Illinois town of Palatine.
Sadhguru shared a report by ANI highlighting the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect involved in threatening a Hindu temple. The Palatine Police Department, in cooperation with the Mount Prospect Police Department, initiated an investigation after receiving intelligence about a potential mass shooting.
Arrest and investigation details
On October 11, Mount Prospect Police contacted Palatine Police upon receiving information about a planned shooting. The intelligence came from a person who had intercepted troubling electronic communication from 19-year-old Alexandros Paporkis.
Authorities discovered that Paporkis had shared a document outlining a supposed plan to commit a mass shooting at a Hindu temple. Alongside this, he also circulated images featuring a rifle, magazines, body armor, and various tactical gear. Police apprehended Paporkis as he was leaving his home.
During a search of Paporkis’s residence conducted under a warrant, law enforcement found a rifle, several loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, tactical equipment, and a tactical vest with patches linked to white supremacist extremism. These items indicated extremist views promoting violence against people of South Asian heritage, especially those of Indian origin.
Charges and law enforcement response
Intelligence officials believe Paporkis intended to carry out the attack on October 11, aiming to target a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area. He faces charges including terrorist threats, a Class X felony, and illegal possession of weapons. Paporkis appeared in court for a detention hearing, where a judge ordered his continued detention.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord stated that the threat’s severity was not underestimated. The coordinated efforts between Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments led to the timely identification and arrest of the suspect. The FBI is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Nord praised the individual who first reported the threat and confirmed that protecting community places of worship remains a top priority as the investigation progresses.
