P.V.N. Madhav recalled how his father spent 19 months underground during India’s Emergency while speaking at a memorial lecture commemorating the 92nd birth anniversary of a respected leader. His remarks highlighted the sacrifices made by political activists during the 1975 Emergency and emphasized the importance of protecting democracy and constitutional values in India.
The Emergency, declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, lasted for 21 months and saw numerous opposition leaders and activists going into hiding to avoid arrest. According to the BJP chief, his father’s decision to go underground was driven by a commitment to democratic values and resistance against authoritarian rule.
“Those were tumultuous times. My father believed in fighting for democracy, even if it meant staying hidden and risking everything,” he said during his speech, highlighting the sacrifices made by many families during that period.
The lecture also focused on the importance of remembering such histories to appreciate the freedoms enjoyed today. The State BJP chief emphasized that the legacy of courage from leaders like his father continues to inspire the current generation of politicians and citizens alike.
“Understanding and acknowledging the past struggles is essential for building a stronger democratic India,” he added, underscoring the responsibilities of both politicians and the public.
The event attracted a diverse audience, including political leaders, scholars, and local residents, all paying tribute to the enduring spirit of those who stood against oppression during the Emergency.
