The POCSO Act was introduced to protect children from sexual offences and provide a legal framework for addressing such crimes. However, the large number of pending cases has emerged as a significant challenge for the judicial system. Thousands of children and their families continue to wait for justice.
Several Other States Also Report a Large Number of Pending Cases
According to the available figures, between 13,000 and 18,000 POCSO cases are pending in Kerala. Rajasthan has approximately 12,000 to 16,000 pending cases, while Tamil Nadu has around 8,000 to 11,000 cases awaiting decisions.
The figures indicate that Uttar Pradesh has a considerably higher number of pending POCSO cases compared to other states, highlighting the need to accelerate judicial proceedings and ensure timely justice.
Parliamentary Standing Committee Reviews the Situation
On Monday, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs reviewed the number of pending POCSO cases and the performance of special fast-track courts in four states.
The committee assessed the functioning of these courts and examined the status of pending cases.
Timely hearings and the punishment of offenders are essential for protecting children’s rights and ensuring justice. Therefore, improving the efficiency of special courts and reducing the backlog of pending POCSO cases remain important priorities for the Indian judicial system.
