Maxwell made his international debut in 2012 and represented Australia in all three formats: Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 cricket. He had previously retired from ODI cricket in June 2025. Now, he has decided to step away from all forms of international cricket, including T20 Internationals. His international career featured a total of 286 matches.
Historic Innings of 201 Runs Against Afghanistan
One of the most memorable performances of Maxwell’s career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan, when he scored an unbeaten 201 runs.
In the match played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Australia were chasing a target of 292 runs but had lost seven wickets for just 91 runs.
At this critical stage, Maxwell produced an extraordinary batting performance. Despite suffering from severe cramps and physical discomfort, he scored an unbeaten 201 off just 128 deliveries, guiding Australia to a historic victory.
This remarkable innings will remain one of the most unforgettable performances in cricket history.
Member of Three World Cup-Winning Australian Teams
Maxwell was part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup-winning teams, as well as the squad that won the 2021 T20 World Cup.
With his retirement, an important chapter in Australian international cricket has come to an end. However, Maxwell is expected to continue playing franchise cricket around the world.
