Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has stressed the need to improve the functioning of the judiciary and enhance the responsiveness of courts. He said that the difference between justice and injustice is not determined solely by the final verdict; it also depends on whether the court intervenes at the appropriate time. He urged the judiciary, particularly constitutional courts, to undertake introspection and evaluate their functioning.
Addressing the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Kerala High Court, the CJI emphasised that timely judicial intervention in important cases is essential. He noted that, in several instances, appropriate action by courts at the right time plays a crucial role in protecting citizens’ rights.
Emphasis on Improving Court Procedures
CJI Surya Kant said that the judiciary must continuously work towards improving its functioning. He highlighted the need to make the case-listing process more transparent and predictable.
Such improvements would help litigants and lawyers better understand hearing schedules and prepare their cases more effectively.
High Courts Play a Crucial Role in India’s Judicial System
During his address, he stated that constitutional justice in India does not begin and end in New Delhi. The country’s 25 High Courts, established across different states, form an essential part of the judicial system.
Each High Court has the responsibility of protecting citizens’ rights and upholding the rule of law.
The CJI described the role of all constitutional courts as vital to strengthening the judiciary. According to him, timely intervention, better judicial administration and transparent procedures are essential to making the justice delivery system more effective.
