Police have arrested Chetan, a ₹25,000 reward-listed accused who had been absconding in connection with the murder of final-year LLB student Ankur Chaudhary in Khurja, Bulandshahr. An encounter took place between police and the accused late Sunday night in the Samaspur outpost area. Chetan sustained gunshot wounds to both legs during retaliatory firing by the police. A country-made pistol, two spent cartridges, one live cartridge and a Bullet motorcycle were recovered from his possession.
According to Khurja Circle Officer Shobhit Kumar Atri, Ankur Chaudhary, a resident of Murari Nagar, was attacked by several people travelling in a car near Power House No. 4 on August 20. The attackers allegedly assaulted him with sticks, bricks and stones. Ankur suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Noida for treatment. He died during treatment on Saturday.
Following Ankur’s death, police intensified their investigation. Based on a complaint filed by Anil Sharma, also known as Punna, a case was registered against seven named accused and six unidentified individuals. The complaint also alleged that shots had been fired during the incident. CCTV footage related to the attack later went viral on social media.
Police launched a series of raids to arrest the accused. According to police, Lakhan was arrested following an encounter and subsequently sent to jail. Bhupendra and Nishant were arrested afterward, while accused Karan surrendered before the court. During the investigation, Chetan’s name also emerged, following which a ₹25,000 reward was announced for information leading to his arrest.
On Sunday night, personnel from the Kotwali police and SWAT team were conducting vehicle checks near Kamalpur village when they spotted a man riding a Bullet motorcycle. Police allegedly attempted to stop him, but he fled toward a forested area. When the police team pursued him, the accused allegedly opened fire at them.
Police then retaliated, during which the accused sustained gunshot wounds to both legs. He was taken to a hospital in an injured condition. During questioning, he was identified as Chetan, a resident of Bagrai Khurd.
According to police, Chetan already has around five criminal cases registered against him. Following his arrest, authorities are taking steps to send him to judicial custody. Police are continuing raids to locate the remaining absconding accused in the case.
