As NEP Curriculum Expands, Experts and Honours Students Voice Concerns Over Declining Core Learning

New Delhi – The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) has seen widespread changes in curriculum design across educational institutions in India. While the NEP aims to broaden learning horizons and promote multidisciplinary education, a growing number of experts and Honours students have expressed apprehensions about its impact on core learning.

According to education specialists, the NEP’s emphasis on expanding curriculum options sometimes comes at the cost of depth in fundamental subjects. Dr. Ramesh Kumar, an education policy analyst, remarked, “While it is important to diversify education, the current approach risks diluting the mastery of essential disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and literature. This might hinder the development of expertise among students pursuing Honours courses.”

Many students enrolled in Honours programs echo these concerns. Priya Sharma, a third-year student at a leading university, shared, “The new curriculum includes a variety of subjects and modular courses, which is interesting, but it leaves less time and focus for core subjects that matter most in our field. This makes in-depth learning and research challenging.”

Experts also highlight potential challenges in assessment patterns and faculty readiness. “The transition to a multidisciplinary framework requires adequate training for educators, as well as assessment reforms that recognize diverse learning outcomes without compromising rigor,” noted Dr. Anjali Mehta, Professor of Higher Education at a premier institution.

Despite these reservations, proponents of the NEP argue that a more flexible and interconnected curriculum prepares students better for the evolving global job market. They assert that it fosters critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability—skills vital for the 21st century.

Educational authorities have acknowledged the feedback and emphasized ongoing efforts to balance breadth and depth in curriculum development. Regular stakeholder consultations, periodic reviews, and pilot studies are reportedly underway to refine the implementation process.

As India pursues educational reforms under the NEP framework, the debate around maintaining core learning rigor alongside curriculum expansion remains active. Both experts and students concur that finding an optimal balance is crucial to ensure that the policy’s objectives translate into tangible academic excellence and holistic development.
